You know how every once in awhile you come across a book that is so good that it takes up permanent space in your brain? If you haven't then you need to read these books now. If you have, then read these anyways...
She's Come Undone - For a guy, Wally Lamb sure does know how to write from the female perspective. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that he treats the female psyche as something not inherrently flawed, but as something human, each with its own quirks. Lamb's main characrer also forces one to consider what it must be like to be grossly overweight and what it will do to one's psyche in today's world.
Promiscuities - Naomi Wolf is too cool for words. Except for her own of course which are some of the best things on paper now as far as I'm concerned. I read this book last year and it threw my take on female sexuality and sexualization out of this world. If you are a mother, a daughter a sister, or a girl in general read this book.
Uppity Women of Ancient Times - This hillarious book is full of the exploits, schemes, capers and devious doings of women from times BC. I laughed the whole time!

It's pretty much a garauntee of society today that someone somewhere in the world is being oppressed, repressed or just generally stepped on. And YOU really ought to be doing something about it. Here's some stuff you oughta know

Imaginge what it would be like to live in a society that locked you up, chained you down, literally bound and gagged your mind, heart and soul, all because of your gender? Women in Afghanistan don't have to imagine, they know. In 1997 the Taliban, a fundamentalist Islamic group seized control of the Afghani government, effectively creating an oligarchy of religious fanatics controlling an entire nation. Previously Afghanistan had been one of the most tolerant and westernized nations in the Middle East, women were free to work outside the home, hold professional jobs and were required to only wear a light veil in mixed company. Today a woman walking outside her house with more than her wrists showing may be stoned to death and the windows of homes where women live must be blacked out so that men may not be tempted by their sinful faces. The penalty for the smallest infraction upon the puritanical rules enforced bythe Tliban is death, usually by stoning. The United States has hesitated to become in volved and halt these atrocities for economic reasons. If we were to offend the Taliban, plans for a large oil line owned in part by U.S. companies would go up in smoke. If you think the United States should take its eye off the bottom line and pay more attention to the big picture send me some email and I will add it to a growing list of names and emails I am planning to send to my Congressional Reps.

Has anyone else noticed that every time you go on vacation, no matter how much sunscreen you put on and how often you reapply you always always get burned? It 's really really annoying when you have to walk around for three weeks feeling like a cross between a snake and a cooked lobster.
